What is Boikanyo?

Boikanyo Mentally & Disabled Children Centre is a non-profit organization (reg # 045-757 NPO) for physically and intellectually disabled children, irrespective of race, religion, or nationality.  It has tax exemption status as a Public Benefit Organisation (PBO 930057926).

Boikanyo was established in 2004 by Super Maphage and some dedicated people in Temba Township, Hammanskraal, about 20km north of Pretoria.  Super Maphage is the Centre Manager and has dedicated herself to looking after these children.

Currently the Centre looks after 25 children of different ages (from 3 to 18 years old) and disabilities.  The main disabilities are cerebral palsy, autism and down’s syndrome.  The children’s needs vary from needing 24-hour support and attention to some being partially independent.

Super and her team of 11 full time employees and volunteers provide an environment where the children, regardless of their disability, can live with love and dignity and are valued and respected.

More specifically, the team’s main aims are:

  • To educate the children to be able to cope with their everyday needs. eg, using the toilet facilities, dress themselves, etc.

  • To build a bridge between education and disability by offering the children educational facilities most of them could never afford

  • To teach the local community ways to understand and cope with disability.

The sorts of activities that the children enjoy daily include stimulation therapy, exercising, playground games, art and craft and social training.

The Centre is overseen by a Board Committee which consists of 6 volunteer members.

Super and the team rely on donations to supplement the small financial support they get from government.

Tour ... by video!

This short video takes you on a quick tour of the home... and introduces the lady who started and runs it. Her name is Super... the right name for an extraordinary lady. Please take time to watch it... it is homemade (!) and it is only a few minutes long!

The key priorities that Boikanyo now needs are:

  • Stimulation/Sensory Room (approx. R100k) with equipment (approx. R40k) along with staff training (approx. R10k) to ensure the right plans are in place for each child.

  • 5 wheelchairs (approx. R90k) for the kids with cerebral palsy as the current ones are not physically supporting them in the way they should be.

So, our aim is to raise R240k through the dinner in February 2020  as well as through personal donations.
